Episode Title

[edit]
  • I thought it might be worth mentioning in the article that this episode seems to be very loosely based on an episode of Star Trek that has the same name. In the South Park episode the kids have incorrect memories of things in the past, where in the Star Trek episode, the characters mess up the timeline in the past.--SCooley138 (talk) 07:36, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody keeps insisting that, until it's been "proved", the title is not a copy of that of the Trek episode of the same name. Of course it bloody well is! When something is blindingly obvious, it's blindingly obvious! The title is an extremely unusual one, and the creators of SP are not ignorami. And in case anyone was dense enough to miss it, the episode provided a character in a Starfleet red shirt! Aridd (talk) 18:43, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forget it; I've added a source. But seriously, rules exist to be applied in an intelligent manner and when they have a purpose, not just for the sake of being obtuse. Aridd (talk) 20:22, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm of the opinion that if you have to resort to abuse and hyperbole on wikipedia, you probably don't have a source. Point in case, the tv.com "cite" is not suitable. It's a user edited website, cites from that are no better than an unreferenced wikipedia article. Pending a suitable cite, I've returned the page to the way it was. Alastairward (talk) 08:06, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is IMDB good enough for you? Ye gods. Talk about misusing the rules for their own sake. Aridd (talk) 08:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you might explain how I'm misusing the rules? I've removed the IMDB link, it too is full of user generated content, no cites are given. Alastairward (talk) 12:18, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Star Trek reference is really obvious with the kid in the red shirt, it even has the logo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.190.253.150 (talk) 17:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We should use some WP:Common Sense here. Of course it's based on the star trek episode. Is there any shred of doubt in anyone's mind about this? Honestly? 67.9.134.143 (talk) 12:54, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, mine. WP:BURDEN also applies. Alastairward (talk) 14:05, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Really? It seems to me that WP:Common Sense was designed to trump other policies including WP:BURDEN in those rare occasions when the rules hinder the quality of an article. Of course it can't trump anything unless a consensus is reached. I would of course be for the inclusion of this information. SCooley138 (talk) 08:25, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I've given it some thought, and would like to suggest a compromise. It could be mentioned in the article that it shares the same title as the star trek episode. Users could then decide for themselves if this SP episode was in some way inspired or influenced by the ST episode. SCooley138 (talk) 08:37, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SYNTH or WP:TRIVIA would seem to counter that. We would put all sorts of uncited material in the article and allow readers to "decide for themselves". Policies and guidelines exist to stop a slew of material being added left, right and centre like this. Alastairward (talk) 10:09, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just a comment, I'm watching South Park DVDs at the moment and each episode has an intro by Matt and Trey. They say that the name of the episode is Flashbacks, not City on the Edge of Forever. --AussieLegend (talk) 08:37, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sticky situation

[edit]

Does anyone know where the catchphrase "Now that's what I'd call a sticky situation" is from - or what TV series etc it's alluding to? -92.228.149.76 (talk) 07:34, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Credits

[edit]

The end credits state that Henry Winkler voiced the Big Scary Monster, and the Fonzie appearing in the episode sounds like he is voiced by Trey Parker instead. Also, the link in the credits section is irrelevant to this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.149.232.112 (talk) 13:08, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, I changed it to match. Alastairward (talk) 18:27, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Titanic Break-Up of Bus

[edit]

The bus breaks in two like the Titanic. I think this should be mentioned in the article because this is a reference to the movie Titanic, IMDB movie connections for this episode say the bus break-up is similar to the ship break-up in that movie, and buses normally don't break in two. The only reason the bus breaks in two in this episode is to parody the Titanic, and I think that should be mentioned in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SamEtches (talkcontribs) 23:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

City on the Edge of ForeverCity on the Edge of Forever (South Park) – This article's title is almost definitely more often used to refer to the Trek episode, which in any random month (this past month) has ten times as many page views as this one. The fact that the "official" title of the Trek episode has a definite article doesn't mean much when it's frequently left out in conversation. The other article is on one of the best-known episodes of one of the most popular science fiction television series in history, whereas this article is on what appears to be just another episode of South Park. Heck, the Trek episode is probably so frequently called "City on the Edge of Forever" (even referred to as such in an episode of another popular show) that Parker and Stone may have mistakenly titled this episode thinking they were giving it an identical title. Conversely, this episode is frequently referred to as "The City on the Edge of Forever", such as in this source currently cited in the article, so disambiguating solely with the definite article is essentially useless.
